Diaspora needs Melkonyan memory

Vova Vardanov, commander of a special detachment, brother-in-arms of Monte Melkonyan shared impressions about the Arstakh war hero during a press conference in Yerevan on June 11.

“I was against admission of a Diaspora representative in our detachment, as it could cause problems. But when I got to know him, I changed my mind. Monte Melkonyan was more a patriot than many others,” he said.

“When Melkonyan was killed in 1993, the Azeris organized a feast, which did not last long, however. The room where they were “celebrating” had burnt,” Vardanov added.

Presently, the Diaspora needs the memory of Melkonyan to symbolize love for the native land, according to him.

At the same time, Vardanov voiced regret that other people who fought along with Melkonyan are not commemorated.
