PRESIDENT KOCHARIAN INTENDS TO STAND FOR A NEW TERM

Armenian President Robert Kocharian intends to stand for the next presidential elections to be held in spring 2003. He declared it in an interview to journalists in course of his visit to Yerevan electric-bulb factory. The head of the state said he had doubted the expediency of becoming a candidate till recently. The leaders of a number of opposition political parties (“People’s Party of Armenia”, “Republic”, “National Unity”), who came out demanding that the President resign, helped him to make the final decision. “There is so much malice in their statement that it is easy to understand how dangerous its authors are for the country. They can poison the whole state with their venom. Having recognized it I came to a conclusion on the necessity of announcing my candidacy,” – Robert Kocharian stated.
