US DOES NOT APPROVE OF THE WORLD BANK’S POSITION CONCERNING TRANSPORTATION OF AZERBAIJANI GAS

US Assistant Secretary of State Elizabeth Jones expressed discontent with the World Bank’s position concerning the gas pipeline project, according to which the gas from Azerbaijani “Shah Deniz” deposit will be transported to Turkey through the territory of Georgia. As it is known WB in a harsh form demanded that Georgia seek for a higher tariff for natural gas transit through the country’s territory via this gas pipeline. Otherwise WB threatens to stop rendering any financial support to Georgia. In compliance with the recommendations of WB Georgia stated that rate of tariff should conform to international standards, which makes 5-10 dollars for transportation of a thousand cubic meters of gas, but the investors offered to establish the tariff at the rate of 2 dollars. Elizabeth Jones positively assessed the policy of Georgia in connection with the project of gas pipeline and expressed regret for the position of the World Bank.
