UN Department of Public Information supports Gyumri authorities and citizens’ efforts to clean the city

More than a hundred school children, musicians, civil society activists and citizens of Gyumri participated in the cleaning of the city action on September 15.

The event is conducted in the framework of the Stand Up and Take Action United Nations worldwide campaign aimed at mobilizing the public to unite their efforts with authorities to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, the UN Department of Public Information reported.

UNDPI Yerevan Office Representative Ms. Maria Dotsenko said: “We are happy to support this important initiative of young people. I am confident that the population of Gyumri is going to continue taking care of their beautiful city and contribute to its development. It is crucial that the Mayor of Gyumri and city authorities are working with us today and are supporting efforts of the young generation.”

Mr. Sergey Gabrielyan, Representative of the Youth Center and UN Corner added: “The youth of Gyumri is enthusiastic and loves the city, so I am sure that we will continue taking actions, which can make our city even more clean and attractive. However the support of local authorities and UNDPI is essential for us. I am proud of our contribution to Armenia’s achievement of the Millennium Development Goals”.

The event was organized by the Shirak Center for Organizing Youth Activities and supported by the city Mayor and municipal authorities, as well as the UN Department of Public Information in partnership with the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs.

The event is also one of a series of events initiated by the UN DPI Yerevan within the framework of the Global Millennium Development Goals Summit, scheduled for 20-22 September 2010 in New York, as well as within the framework of the International Year of Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding.
