CAVANAUGH SAYS ONE SHOULDN’T ASSERT PRESIDENTS OF ARMENIA AND AZERBAIJAN WILL REACH COMPROMISE IN GENEVA

YEREVAN, May 5. /Mediamax/. American ambassador at large Carey Cavanaugh has welcomed a “constructive” role of Russia in the Karabakh settlement, the world news agencies report. Further destabilization in the Southern Caucasus is hardly possible during the office of President Vladimir Putin, he told the press in London on Friday.
Cavanaugh noted that the latest round of negotiations between the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan, which took place in the United States, showed that Robert Kocharyan and Geidar Aliyev are intensifying their dialog, Cavanaugh said. That does not mean that they will reach a compromise at the next round of the negotiations in Geneva in mid-June, but they are working rather actively, he noted. Cavanaugh did not disclose details of a draft agreement, but gave to understand that most of the proposals had been put on paper.
Reuters, quoting diplomatic sources, notes that the leaders hoped to sign an agreement in July when U.S. President George W. Bush, Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Jacques Chirac will be in Genoa, Italy, for a Group of Eight nations summit. –0–
