Microsoft confirms rumors on Windows Phone 7 OS upgrade delay

Microsoft has confirmed rumors and will be delaying the release of a long-awaited OS upgrade for its Windows Phone 7 smartphone platform, as it irons out any final bugs in the system.

Writing on the company's blog, the General Manager, Customer Experience Engineering, Eric Hautala said that the recent problems with the mini-update that knocked out a small number of Samsung phones had given the company pause for thought, and it decided to be more careful with the larger NoDo update that was due this week.

The upgrade – which adds the copy/paste facility amongst others – will now go out later this month.

He also confirmed that following the recent problems the company is "carefully studying the current update process and will apply the lessons learned from it to all future ones."

In response to some speculation that some mobile networks might block OS upgrades, without absolutely denying it, he did say that some networks might ask for OS upgrades to be sent out on a specific date, or bundled together with other updates. He did say that users "should" ultimately receive all of the OS upgrades.

He concluded by noting that the OS upgrade delay should in no way impact the timing of future updates, including the one announced recently at Mobile World Congress featuring multitasking, a Twitter feature, and a new HTML 5-friendly version of Internet Explorer Mobile, cellular-news reported.
