NKR SHARPLY CRITICIZES STATEMENTS OF ARMENIAN DEPUTIES

09.02.2001, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. Head of the permanent commission for foreign affairs of NKR parliament Vahram Atanesian criticized the position of a number of deputies of the Armenian National Assembly, who, according to Atanesian, declared that Samvel Babayan wasn’t implicated in the terrorist act against NKR President.
Commenting upon the appeal of Armenian deputies to NKR President Arkady Ghukasian concerning the trial of NKR ex defense minister Samvel Babayan, which proceeds in Stepanakert, Atanesian noted that “it’s obvious that certain forces attempt to politicize the process”. Head of the parliamentary commission of NKR said such statements “contradict with the common sense”.
Vahram Atanesian especially noted that Armenian parliamentarians often had a chance to be present at the court sessions and meet with the judge and other participants of the trial, as well as with Samvel Babayan, so that they could have a clear view of the trial.
As regards the appeal of the Armenian parliamentarians to NKR President Arkady Ghukasian to become the guarantor of the trial, Atanesian noted that the head of the state can’t interfere with the activity of the judicial bodies and influence their decisions. “Deputies, interested in the independence of the court mustn’t speak with such statements”, Vahram Atanesian stressed. Nagorno Karabakh is already an established state, and the judicial power of the country has a right to make decisions independently, he said. -0-
