Armenia involves international community in refugees’ problems solution

Armenia hopes for international community’s help to solve the housing problem of Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan.

As the head of migration agency at the Ministry of Territorial Administration of Armenia, Gagik Yeganyan, told journalists on May 23, other countries assist the states which accepted large flows of refugees, on responsibility division principle.

Mr. Yeganyan stated that UN Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Gutteres attended the conference on the issue, which was held in Yerevan on May 17. “The conference reached its goal. It was noted that it’s an urgent problem not only for Armenia, but also for the entire international community,” said Yeganyan.

He reminded that more than half million of Armenians in Azerbaijan were forced to leave their homes in 1988-1992. 360 thousand of them found shelter in Armenia. The head of migration committee added that since 2005, $3-5 mln was allocated for refugees' housing purposes but in 2010-2011 no means were assigned because of the global economic crisis.

He also added that 1175 refugee families should be housed, 860 of them in Yerevan. According to him, about $45 mln will be need for the final decision of dwelling problem for refugees from Azerbaijan living in Armenia.
