TALKS ABOUT POSSIBLE ENTRY OF AZERBAIJAN TO NATO ARE OF THEORETICAL CHARACTER, G. ROBERTSON SAID

12.01.2001, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. “My visit isn’t at all aimed at supporting the idea of the Southern Caucasian states’ possible membership in NATO”, NATO Secretary General Lord George Robertson told Armenian journalists in Brussels, commenting upon the statements of Baku officials concerning Azerbaijan’s wish to become a NATO member.
Lord Robertson said none of the Southern Caucasian states has applied for NATO membership and “such statements are of academical, theoretical character at present”.
NATO Secretary General said he would like the countries of the region “to participate fully in “Partnership for Peace” (PfP), so that they will be better able to participate in international peace-keeping operations and to benefit from the security and defense reforms of the countries that are also members of PfP”.
George Robertson will start his visit to Yerevan on Monday, January 15. -0-
