09.01.2001, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. The work on examining mined territories, demining and rendering harmless the military loads, proceeds in NKR, the correspondent of Mediamax reports from Stepanakert. The work is coordinated by the governmental mine commission and is financed by International Red Cross Committee (IRCC) office in Stepanakert and the British non-governmental humanitarian HALO Trust organization.
Recently mine accidents tend to decline, the commission informs. In 2000 the number of people killed and injured by mines has reduced twice as compared with the previous year. This is stipulated by the effective work of the interested organizations.
5235 military loads of different types, 1414 shells, 755 bombs, 83 anti-infantry and anti-tank mines were found and rendered harmless in 2000.
The IRCC Office in Stepanakert carries out preventive work among NKR population. In particular, “Mine information” training program was realized in 28 settlements of the republic. -0-
