09.01.2001, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. The Prime Minister of Armenia received on January 7 the Chairman of the Ministerial Committee of the Council of Europe, Latvian Foreign Minister Indulis Berzins, who visited Armenia to discuss a number of issues on Armenia’s entry to CoE, Mediamax was informed in the press service of the government of Armenia.
During the meeting Margarian marked the importance of Armenia’s entry to the CoE and stressed that up to present Armenia has fulfilled all the obligations laid before the country. The Premier said the country stands ready to carry out all the taken obligations.
Touching upon the question of simultaneous membership of Armenia and Azerbaijan to the CoE, Margarian said this circumstance is desirable but not obligatory. “It would be strange for the people, authorities and the political forces of Armenia that Armenia’s membership is connected with the results of the repeated parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan or with processes taking place in other countries”, Margarian stressed.
At the same time Armenian Prime Minister voiced his hope that the results of the repeated parliamentary elections to Milli-Majlis will not influence the development of democratic processes in Azerbaijan, and the state flags of both the countries will be raised in Strasbourg simultaneously.
In his turn Berzins stressed that the soonest entry of the two countries to the Council of Europe will promote establishment of peace and stability in the region. -0-
