09.01.2001, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. OSCE observers assessed the January 7 repeated parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan more democratic if compared with the elections, held on November 5, 2000, Mediamax was informed in the press office of the OSCE.
Nevertheless, according to the conclusion of the International observation mission, the elections did not correspond to a number of international standards of democratic elections.
Despite the measures, taken by Azeri authorities, the elections were held in an atmosphere of distrust and were boycotted by several opposition parties. Serious violations were fixed in several local electoral commissions, where in some cases pressure on the part of the local authorities was exerted.
However, on the whole, the repeated elections were held in a peaceful atmosphere and compared with the last elections the observers could freely realize their mission. On their part cases of falsification of bulletins and violations in the count process were marked. The International observation mission demanded from the authorities of the republic the publication of the results of the elections in all the electoral districts to achieve more transparency of the process.
The OSCE commission for democratic institutions and human rights, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe expressed their readiness to cooperate with the authorities and the people of Azerbaijan for the further consolidation of democracy in the country. -0-
