NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC UNION OF ARMENIA SUPPORTS THE INITIATIVE ON INCREASING THE NUMBER OF PROPORTIONAL SEATS IN PARLIAMENT

18.11.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. Along the past years the National Democratic Union (NDU) of Armenia stated for several times that it stands for conduct of elections on proportional system only, Seyran Avagian, a member of NDU board, deputy of the National Assembly of Armenia said in an interview to Mediamax.
According to Avagian, during the inter-faction talks the sides widely shared on the compromising version according to which 94 deputies will be elected on party lists, and 37 – on majority system.
The parliamentarian expressed a notion that if this changes are approved at November 20 session of the National Assembly they will significantly affect the activity of the next parliament. At the same time Mr. Avagian said that it is not excluded that “casual” candidates may appear in the party lists. He stressed that in that case the parties themselves have to play a restricting role. –0–
