06.11.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. Today the students of the Yerevan State Institute of Foreign Languages after V. Bryusov (YSIFL) held a warning strike in front of the institute building, demanding the payment of scholarships for the past 5 months.
This action was a peculiar continuation of the recent rally of the students of the State Pedagogical Institute to the Government building, as a result of which the demands of the strikers were partially complied with and the scholarships for 2 months were paid to the students.
After the unsuccessful requests of YSIFL leadership to stop the strike and peacefully go back to classrooms, the rector of the institute Suren Zolian agreed to receive the students. He stated that the scholarships are paid not from the means of the institute but from the state budget, the sad state of which is well known.
As a solution to the problem the heads of the institute suggested paying the scholarships from the means, which are received at the expense of the payable sector, calling the payer students to make their payments. However, the sides didn’t manage to come to a compromise and the question remains unsolved.
The students are determined and plan to continue the action. -0-
