07.10.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. “I congratulate the brotherly nation of Yugoslavia with a brilliant victory and I welcome the determination of Yugoslavs which helped them achieve their aim”, said in the interview to MEDIAMAX the chairman of the National-Democratic Union (NDU), National Assembly deputy Vazgen Manukian.
Manukian brought parallels between the present Yugoslavian developments and the September events of 1996 in Armenia, when Manukian’s electors, disagreeing with the results of the presidential elections, took by storm the building of the Armenian parliament. Manukian noted that although there are some similarities, these two events also differ in certain ways. “The difference is particularly in who stood behind the opposition in Yugoslavia. Besides, unlike in Armenia, in Belgrade not only the leaders of the opposition, but also the nation itself displayed determination”, noted the Armenian parliamentary.
According to Manukian, three main stages can be observed in the present history of Armenia: 1988 – the beginning of the Karabakh movement, 1993 – breaking in the Karabakh war, and September 1996. However, in the viewpoint of Manukian, the difficulties of the liberation fight of the Armenian nation are incomparable to the hardships the Yugoslavian nation faced. “The Yugoslavs have experienced a more difficult war and have again found courage and strength to fight for their rights. I hope the Armenian nation also has that vigor”, V. Manukian stressed. -0-
