07.10.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. The representatives of the Republican and People’s Parties of Armenia, entering “Unity” bloc, and the deputy groups and factions National-Democratic Union (NDU), “Dashnaktsutiun”, “Stability”, “Orinatz Yerkir” and “Constitutional Right” Union will meet today in Yerevan, stated in the interview to MEDIAMAX the representative of NDU leadership, the deputy of the National Assembly Vazgen Manukian.
Today the factions and deputy groups, boycotting the work of the parliament after the story of non-acceptance of Speaker Armen Khachatrian’s resignation, hope to learn about the future plans and intentions of the bloc, Manukian said. “I think that the formed indefinite situation in the parliament may last for a long time, as it will be too difficult to nominate a candidacy for the new speaker”, he stressed.
According to Manukian, the representatives of “Unity” have repeatedly mentioned lately about the possible breakdown of their bloc, in connection with what the necessity to form a new parliamentary majority was aroused. The parliamentary noted that for this reason the deputy unions, including NDU faction, have held consultations with the representatives of the Republican Party, “though they can’t really be called negotiations”.
“Concerning the formation of a new parliamentary majority I proposed the heads of the parties to meet and determine: what tasks do we have and which are the ways of their realization”, said V. Manukian.
In his point of view, the formed unordinary situation in the National Assembly is connected with the fact that the question whether “Unity” bloc exists or not is still open. In order to hold consultations about the possible formation of a new parliamentary majority, it is necessary to receive a unanimous answer to this question”, Manukian stressed. -0-
