04.10.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. The morning session of the trial of the case of the terrorist act against RNK president, which is held in Stepanakert, began today with the hearing of the testimony of the witnesses.
RNK National Assembly deputy Vasiliy Atajanian informed that on December 14, 1999, on the eve of his resignation from the post of the Commander of the Defense Army, Samvel Babayan called him and told to sign under the address of a group of RNK parliament deputies with a demand of RNK President’s impeachment. According to V. Atajanian, he refused S. Babayan and tried to talk him out of his intention, “but he was headstrong and determined”.
The investigator for especially important cases of the General Prosecutor’s Office of RNK, Armen Sarkisian, who questioned Samvel Babayan during the preliminary investigation, categorically denied the possibility of applying drastic medicaments toward the accused, S. Babayan in particular. In his assertion, under the influence of drastic means a person cannot clearly organize his thoughts, as did S. Babayan. Armen Sarkisian informed that in his statements the ex defense minister confessed that the terrorist act was committed by his instructions and said he was sorry that the “guys got caught through his fault”. A. Sarkisian expressed reproach in the address of those mass media which groundlessly spread the question of using drastic means by the investigators to get statements from the accused.
The trial of the case of March 22 terrorist act against RNK president Arkady Ghukasian began on September 18. The main accused of the case is RNK ex defense minister, Lieutenant-General Samvel Babayan. -0-
