19.09.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. Armenian Prime Minister Andranik Margarian addressed a message to international organizations and foreign countries, asking them to help in the liquidation of the emergency state situation formed in the country as a result of the continuous drought, was reported to MEDIAMAX in the press service of the government of the country.
In the message it is particularly said that because of the drought, in the course of which a highest temperature was observed in Armenia for the last century, the agriculture of the country has appeared in a most difficult condition. “The cereals and fodder crops have been damaged, the pastures are in a hopeless condition. The total damage of the drought has made 40 million dollars. If we consider the expected losses in the stock-raising sphere, then the total losses in the agricultural field will be incomparably high”, says the message of the Armenian Premier.
Margarian also noted that serious problems in irrigation systems have aroused in the country – water reserves in rivers of the country have decreased for 40-45%. “The present water reserves aren’t enough to realize additional measures to restore the level of water supplies”, is said in the address.
In sum, noted Margarian, in order to liquidate drought consequences, 12.000 tons of grain-crops, 10-12 thousand tons of diesel oil, 30.000 tons of fertilizers, more than 100.000 tons of grain and other food products must be invested to the country.
“On behalf of the Armenian Government I turn to the governments of all the countries, to international organizations, and to the whole world community to help our country”, states the address of the head of the Armenian government. -0-
