02.09.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. “I do not exclude that the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe will approve the PACE decision about Armenia’s full membership in CE already in September”, told the journalists the chairman of the permanent parliamentary committee for foreign affairs of the National Assembly of Armenia, Hovanes Hovanesian.
Mr. Hovanesian didn’t exclude that the Committee of Ministers may approve the decision of Azerbaijan’s full membership in CE later. The recent aggravation of internal political situation in Azerbaijan and the stopping of publication of one of the opposition papers may make the Committee of Ministers of CE postpone the consideration of this question until the results of Azerbaijani parliamentary elections, to be held in November, said Hovanesian.
The first discussion of the question of Armenia’s and Azerbaijan’s full membership in the Council of Europe will take place in Strasbourg on September 6 – on the level of CE Committee of Ministers’ envoys, was reported to MEDIAMAX in the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia.
On July 28, 2000 the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe voted for Armenia’s accession to CE, with 123 PACE deputies for, no one against, and 7 abstentions.-0-
