THE SETTLEMENT OF THE KARABAKH CONFLICT WILL BE ACHIEVED MUCH EASIER IF ECONOMIC COOPERATION STARTS BETWEEN ARMENIA AND AZERBAIJAN, DECLARED ARMENIAN PRESIDENT ROBERT KOCHARIAN

19.08.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. The next meeting of the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan will be held in September 2000 in New York within the framework of the UN “Millenium Summit”.
As was reported to MEDIAMAX in the press office of the president of Armenia, Robert Kocharian declared this on August 18 in Yalta after the meeting with the president of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev. The Armenian president noted that the sides will continue the direct dialogue, as they realize that the settlement of the conflict should be a compromise one and at the same time should be acceptable for all the sides of the conflict.
In reply to the question of an Azeri journalist why Robert Kocharian stresses the economic cooperation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Armenian leader said that in case of such cooperation between Yerevan and Baku, the formula of the Karabakh conflict settlement will be found much easier.
“If our countries are tied by mutual economic interests, this will help us get rid of unnecessary suspiciousness and will form a favorable atmosphere for the settlement of the conflict”, stressed Robert Kocharian.
The president of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh Arkady Ghukasian said on August 17 that none of the agreements, achieved during the negotiations between Aliyev and Kocharian, can be final, unless it takes into account the position of Nagorno Karabakh.
Ghukasian said that negotiations would be more productive in case of RNK’s involvement into the negotiation process. “I know such a step will be very hard for the president of Azerbaijan, but the events will logically develop to this”, stressed Arkady Ghukasian. -0-
