THE FOREIGN MINISTER OF ARMENIA THINKS TURKEY HAS SOMEWHAT CHANGED IS ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE FACT OF THE GENOCIDE OF ARMENIANS

11.07.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. “We can’t renounce the demanding of international recognition and condemnation of the Genocide of Armenians of 1915”, declared today the foreign minister of Armenia Vardan Oskanian at the press conference in the National press club.
He noted that “Turkey has driven itself into a corner”, denying during 75 years the very fact of committing this crime. However, the Armenian minister said, it has become evident lately that the representatives of the Turkish intellectuals and mass media display a rather bold position in the issue of the genocide of Armenians and take part in international conferences and seminars on this subject. “I think that this is done with the consent of Turkish authorities which thus strive to explore the reaction of the public opinion”, said Vardan Oskanian.
The head of the ministry of foreign affairs of Armenia noted that at the last meeting of the presidents of Armenia and the USA in Washington D.C. Bill Clinton declared that the USA will henceforth try to play the role of a mediator in the matter of normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations. But despite it, Oskanian said, the Turkish authorities are trying to link the matter of establishing diplomatic relations with Armenia to the settlement of the Karabakh problem”. -0-
