Poland to lend $7.8 billion to IMF

Poland's Finance Minister says the country plans to lend around euro 6 billion euros ($7.8 billion) to the International Monetary Fund to boost its ability to help indebted eurozone states.

Jacek Rostowski says the funds would come from the reserves of the National Bank of Poland. The money would be released in a series of payments based on the needs of the IMF, but payments would stop automatically should Poland's own economic situation worsen.

Rostowski's comments, made Monday, December 19, on the radio station RMF FM, follow a European Union summit earlier this month where leaders agreed to add up to euro200 billion ($261.3 billion) to the IMF's emergency reserves, The Associated Press reported.

Poland and several other ex-communist countries, the recipients of huge EU subsidies for years, are among those asked for help.
