RA NA vice-speaker: Armenia, NKR welcome Sochi statement on Karabakh

The statement on the outcomes of Sochi meeting on Karabakh settlement between Dmitry Medvedev, Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan agrees with both Armenia and NKR positions on the issue, according to vice-speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia.

“With Armenian sides promoting peaceful settlement of the conflict, the official Baku kept stressing the possibility for a military solution,” Eduard Sharmazanov said, believing that Azerbaijan’s agreeing to join a statement stipulating for peaceful settlement was a result of pressure.

“Azerbaijan’s failure to shift the Karabakh settlement negotiations format despite the official Baku’s accession to UN Security Council as a non-permanent member came as another positive result of Sochi meeting,” the vice-speaker concluded.

At January 23 trilateral presidential meeting in Sochi Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan stressed the need to refrain from extreme measures, calling for continuation of approximating positions.

“Considering the importance of shifting to development of peace agreement, Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan expressed readiness to expedite an agreement on Basic principles,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, adding that heads of the two states had requested Russia to mediate humanitarian ties between the two countries.
