Armenians may attend Euronest PA meeting in Baku if guaranteed safety

Armenian delegation has expressed a wish to partake in a plenary sitting of Euronest Parliamentary Assembly due on April 2-5 in Azerbaijan, according to Artak Zakaryan, co-chair of Euronest Committee on Social Affairs, Education, Culture and Civil Society.

In this context, Mr. Zakaryan noted that Azerbaijani delegation members experienced no security problems in Yerevan, whereas even Russian sportsmen of Armenian descent encountered problems in Baku.

Dwelling on participation of Azeri delegation in Euronest Committee’s activity in Yerevan, Zakaryan noted that fears over focusing solely on Nagorno Karabakh conflict were luckily avoided.

According to him, Azerbaijani representatives admitted the existence of propaganda in their country that hinders establishment of a more effective dialogue. The Armenian co-chair further voiced hope for their committee to confine total and unacceptable propaganda in Euronest format.

“The sooner civil society with free thinking is formed in Azerbaijan, the more tangible will be the chances of conflict resolution,” Zakaryan concluded.

On February 22-23, Euronest Committee on Social Affairs, Education, Culture and Civil Society held the first meeting, during which report on Strengthening Civil Society was discussed.
