Armenia rejects transfer of territorial control to any third party

Armenia does not and will not discuss transferring control of its sovereign territory to any third party, the press secretary of the Prime Minister, Nazeli Baghdasaryan, stated.

Her comments were a response to a recent statement by the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, who suggested the U.S. might lease a section of Armenian territory for the so-called “Zangezur Corridor,” according to Armenpress.

“The terminology you referenced is unacceptable to the Republic of Armenia. We have repeatedly stated that Armenia discusses regional infrastructure unblocking solely within the framework of the Republic’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and jurisdiction. We cannot entertain any other logic. As for land leasing, Armenian legislation allows for it only in relation to agricultural land used for farming activities. Therefore, the version mentioned by the U.S. ambassador is not feasible,” Baghdasaryan said.

She was also asked whether the ambassador might have meant delegating road control rather than land leasing.

“Armenia has not discussed and is not discussing the delegation of control over its sovereign territory to any third party. No part of Armenia’s territory can be placed outside its territorial integrity, sovereignty, or jurisdiction,” she emphasized.
