Dismantlement of the monument in Kars was expectable; however, the issue should not be politicized, according to an Armenian expert.
As Ruben Melkonyan told PanARMENIAN.Net, the whole issue with Armenia-Turkey friendship monument is nothing but demonstration of Turkish Prime Minister’s eccentricities.
“First it was merely Erdogan’s wish. However, the demolition might be given a political coloring on the threshold of parliamentary elections in Turkey to gain Azeri nationalists’ votes,” Melkonyan stressed.
The Kars Municipality has decided to demolish the hotly debated Monument to Humanity designated to advance “Turkish-Armenian friendship”. Eleven members of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and eight members of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) voted to demolish the statue during the municipal assembly meeting; four members of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) voted against.
