Armenian grandmaster Hrant Melkumian scored a win over Nils Grandelius (Switzerland) in the third round of the European Chess Championship in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
With 3 points, Melkumian currently shares the 1st-11th places. With additional results the player takes the 7th place.
Meanwhile, Vladimir Akopian beat Pavel Simacek (Czech Republic), while Hovhannes Gabuzyan and Zaven Andreasian tied games vs. Vladimir Potkin (Russia) and Bosko Tomic (Bosnia and Herzegovina) respectively. Arman Pashikian and Vladimir Poghosian lost to Ogulcan Kanmazalp (Turkey) and Miodrag Perunovic (Serbia) resp.
The winner will get euro 14 thous. The event is organized in 11-round Swiss system in accordance with the ECU Tournament Rules and FIDE Laws of Chess.
The rate of play will be 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one.
