LACK OF TRUST BETWEEN AUTHORITIES AND OPPOSITION SERIOUS PROBLEM IN ARMENIA, PACE RAPPORTEUR CONSIDERS

In the opinion of PACE members, who observed the presidential election in Armenia, the most serious problem in Armenia is the lack of trust between the authorities and opposition. As reported by “Mediamax” agency, rapporteur on Armenia Yezhi Yaskerny said at PACE yesterday’s session there was lack of trust and cooperation between political forces of Armenia. “Addressing international observers before the beginning of the election people spread rumor and distorted information. Surely, it influenced the outcome and formed an atmosphere of hatred,” – the rapporteur stated. The head of the observation mission at the Armenian presidential election Lord Russell-Johnston in his turn stated Armenia had all opportunities to organize transparent and fair election. “I hope we will witness it in May,” – he said. However, in Russell-Johnston’s words, this will become possible only if the government and opposition leaders abide by the idea of free election.
