People’s Party leader: free elections need political will of government

Leader of People's Party of Armenia Stepan Demirchyan believes the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) has nominated strong candidates by majority system, and they may gain victory at May 6 parliamentary elections.

“The situation in Armenian provinces is disastrous; everything develops irregularly,” ANC’s nominee Demirchyan told a press conference on May 4.

“People are disappointed; still, they have some expectations with regard to ANC. Our victory will benefit the society; the National Assembly will get principle force. Otherwise, hardly literate people will enter the parliament,” the party leader stated.

According to him, all forces are rivalling in the elections, while the authorities are able to hold fair elections if they demonstrate political will.

“Instead, they resort to forgery. It’s good we’ll have observers to follow the elections, but nothing will change if the people tolerate the violations,” Demirchyan said.

Parliamentary elections are due in Armenia on May 6 featuring 8 political parties (Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), Prosperous Armenia, ARF Dashnaktsutyun (ARFD), Orinats Yerkir, Heritage, Democratic Party of Armenia (DPA), Communist Party of Armenia and United Armenians party, as well as one election bloc represented by opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC).
