Paper: early presidential elections possible in fall

Haykakan Zhamanak daily cites its sources as saying that Armenian leader Serzh Sargsyan’s supporters consider the option of holding pre-term presidential elections in October-November 2012.

“To do this, Sargsyan should resign in September. The idea of early elections revived after the May 6 parliamentary voting. Sargsyan’s team saw it possesses an efficient tool to organize supervised elections, and now considers employing this mechanism once again to re-elect Sargsyan,” the daily says.

According to the paper, this must be done as soon as possible, while the political forces have not recovered from the parliamentary elections and managed to unite against Sargsyan.

Haykakan Zhamanak reminds that the idea of early parliamentary or presidential elections was seriously discussed by authorities back in 2011 fall, but finally they abandoned the thought.

However, following the recent parliamentary vote, the idea of special presidential elections seems viable, the paper says.
