Swedish orchestra to perform at Armenian Genocide Memorial

String orchestra from the Swedish town of Halmstad will perform in Tsitsernakaberd at 3pm on May 14, Halmstad musical school director Ulf Fembro said.

“We love being in Armenia. Armenia is not widely known in Sweden; I hope that our visit will mark the start of a wonderful cooperation between the two countries,” Fembro told a press conference in Yerevan.

Besides, the orchestra will perform in Arno Babajanyan concert hall with UNICEF Junior Chamber Orchestra (artistic head and chief conductor Sergey Smbatyan) on May 16, and in Tigranyan musical school on May 17.

According to orchestra conductor Mats Reuter, the performance will feature works by Scandinavian composers, as well as those by Mirzoyan and Komitas. Next year Sweden will perhaps host Armenian musicians, Reuter said.

Halmstad string orchestra comprises 24 musicians aged 14 to 20. Despite being a small town, Halmstad has a musical school accommodating 1700 students, Fembro said. The orchestra travels worldwide, their performances ranging from baroque to modern works.
