The Constitutional Court of Armenia last evening overruled the suit of ex-candidate for the president, leader of the National Unification party Artashes Geghamian to recognize void the returns of the presidential election first round held February 19. The court chairman Gagik Harutyunian read out the court verdict, according to which the facts provided by the plaintiff did not provide sufficient ground for recognizing the election returns void. As reported by “Arka” agency, the court resolved that the materials presented by the complainant could not influence the final outcome of the election. At the same time G. Harutyunian noted that the central electoral commission of Armenia did not have any ground for passing a decision February 20 on holding the second round of the presidential election without possessing data on the degree of inexactitude. However, in his words, the number did not have an impact on the election returns. G. Harutyunian also stated that imperfection of the Armenian legislation caused some irregularities. The Constitutional Court head noted there was no necessary legal basis for a possible appeal of the election returns at the Constitutional Court and passing a fair constitutional decision. G. Harutyunian concluded that the court decision was final and was not subject to appeal. Attorney Ruben Hovhannisian presenting A. Geghamian’s interests at the court did not rule out that his client might appeal to the European Court of Human Rights after familiarizing with the Constitutional Court verdict.
