FOREIGN INVESTORS NOT HURRYING TO FINANCE BAKU-TBILISI-CEYHAN PIPELINE

Heydar Aliyev’s lingering decease has negatively influenced upon the situation in the country and particularly upon a number of economic projects with the participation of foreign investors. As “Nezavisimaya Gazeta” Russian newspaper writes, today international financial corporations and banks are testing Baku’s power and endurance. Thus, financing the construction of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline being of utmost for Azerbaijan is postponed to the current autumn. Being the project operator, “British Petroleum Azerbaijan” company head Davis Woudword did not rule out that the resolution on this issue will have been carried only by the end of the year. Nominally, the investors connect the postponement of the crediting with the necessity of conducting an ecological expertise of the project at the urgent request of a number of non-governmental organizations. However, the analysts speak about other reasons of such a decision. The president’s illness increases the possibility of political risks for any kind of business in the country. But the investors first take into consideration the changes in the region after Iraqi war completion that is why decrease of importance of pipelines of BTC type is quite possible. The financiers to all appearances decided not to take the risk.
