ARMENIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY CALLS NOT TO POLITICIZE INTERNATIONAL OBSERVERS ASSESSMENTS OF PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

The point of view of international observers on the presidential election of Armenia is not a sentence but an evaluation of the quality of the electoral process. By expressing their opinion they contribute to elimination of shortcomings in it. Armenian foreign ministry press secretary Dzyunik Aghajanian told the Public TV Company of Armenia. In her words, one should not politicize the evaluations given to the electoral process, which both candidates participated in and had their impact upon. Speaking of the differences between the assessments given by Council of Europe and CIS observers, the press secretary noted, “this is rather an issue of difference between standards used for evaluation.” “The CIS observers were making evaluations on the basis of their experience in the Commonwealth countries, the OSCE mission based itself upon the standards peculiar to Europe,” – D. Aghajanian explained. As of the special attention and exactingness of European observers towards the present election, Armenia was not a Council of Europe member before and did not have certain obligations to it, she noted. The press secretary denied the hearsay that world superpowers backed candidates for the president of Armenia. “Washington has always paid much attention to the developments in Armenia, especially since 1996, and the issue of bias against any of the candidates should not be raised,” – D. Aghajanian stated. “Any election influences a country’s rating, for which not only authorities, but also all political forces and the society are responsible,” – she noted. “From this point of view the opposition intention to appeal against the election returns in the Constitutional Court is welcomed and is evidence that issues in Armenia are settled within legal framework,” – D. Aghajanian said.
