The US is profoundly disappointed with the transgressions registered in the course of the Armenian presidential elections. US Department of State press secretary Richard Boucher said. The statement notes the United States agrees with the preliminary opinion of the OSCE and PACE observation missions, according to which “serious violations at many polling stations” were registered at the presidential elections March 5, and the electoral process “fell short of international standards of democratic elections.” R. Boucher noted “the Armenian leadership has missed a good chance to continue the democratization process via holding trustworthy elections.” “We call the government to take the road of building democratic Armenia, starting with the process of valuable and transparent investigation of the infringements in the course of the election, punishing people in charge, as well as take other steps necessary to restore the public confidence,” – R. Boucher’s statement says. He called the opposition “to express grounded protest in a peaceful and legal way, and all political forces to avoid violence after the election and to act within the limits of the Constitution.” The statement also notes, “US welcomes first TV debate in the history of Armenia between incumbent president Robert Kocharian and opposition candidate Stepan Demirchian, as well as the presence of local observers at over 50% of the polling places.
