Current leader Serzh Sargsyan is a clear favorite at the upcoming presidential race which lacks other major “players,” according to the head of the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford.
In a conversation with 168 Zham daily s Prof. Neil MacFarlane commented on a possibility for Armenian National Congress (ANC) opposition bloc leader Levon Ter-Petrossian to announce his candidacy for president.
“Ter-Petrossian seems to be waiting for Prosperous Armenia leader Gagik Tsarukyan’s decision. Tsarukyan’s entering the race will possibly discourage Ter-Petrossian from running for president,” the expert said.
Dwelling on Armenia-Russia ties, the expert stressed President Sargsyan’s relations with Moscow as positive. Mr. MacFarlane believes Moscow likely to support current leader’s candidacy seeing no sense for Russia to take the opposition’s side.
