PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN ARMENIA WILL HARDLY INFLUENCE KARABAKH SETTLEMENT, BAKU CONSIDERS

“Reelection of Robert Kocharian as Armenian president will not have a positive impact on the negotiations on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, but will let continue the talks at the present rate.” As reported by “Arminfo” agency, chief of the department of international relations of Azeri president’s staff Novruz Mamedov told “Turan” agency when commenting on the early returns of the presidential elections in Armenia. “Certain steps were taken to achieve mutual understanding between Heydar Aliyev and Robert Kocharian,” – Mamedov said. At the same time the president’s administration representative noted that Kocharian would hardly decline his pledge to his people. Leader of “National Independence” opposition party of Azerbaijan Etibar Mamedov expressed opinion that reelection of Kocharian would not introduce anything novel into the relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. “The standstill in the relations between the two countries will continue this year, since Kocharian does not intend to make concessions to Azerbaijan,” – Etibar Mamedov said. Leader of “Musavat” Azeri opposition party Isa Hambar noted there were no differences in the positions of the candidates for the president of Armenia on the issue of the Karabakh settlement. Thus, in his words, the victory of any of them will not fundamentally influence the relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the prospects of the conflict settlement.
