IN MIKHAIL GORBACHEV’S OPINION “ALIYEV’S BUSINESS BAD REALLY”

It looks like Azeri president Heydar Aliyev’s business is really bad, if he resorts to such methods. Former USSR president Mikhail Gorbachev told a Baku newspaper when commenting information on filing a criminal suit against himself in Azerbaijan in connection with the events of January 20, 1990. According to the Azeri party, as reported by “Arminfo,” the announcing of the state of emergency in the republic is a reason for beginning criminal prosecution of the former USSR leader. It was introduced after the activities of the Supreme Council and other political and state bodies of the republic appeared to be paralyzed, tens of people became victims of extremist rages, authority was violently swept away in a number of regions. In official Baku’s opinion, the Soviet Union’s illegal action resulted in the bloody events in Baku. According to merely official data, “the establishing of the constitutional order” caused death of 134 civilians, injured 700, 12 were missing. Mikhail Gorbachev doubted that the Azeri president did not possess information about the situation in that period. He supposed that Aliyev’s “business must be really down.” “Something makes him worry and he tosses. Otherwise one cannot explain this noisy campaign, in which even religious circles are included,” – Gorbachev said. In his words, the Azeri opposition asks unsuitable questions to Aliyev, that is why “he needed such an abstractive maneuver.”
