Gul Sure Court will Pass Fair Decree Regarding Pamuk

In an interview with the Financial Times Turkish FM Abdullah Gul spoke about problems on judicial system reform and recognized that the case against writer Orhan Pamuk resulted in serious difficulties for Ankara. This is true especially taking into account statements on respecting the commitment to freedom of speech the country makes from time to time, he added. «Judges are conservative, while prosecutors are even more conservative,» Gul stated. He did not agree that the case against Pamuk by itself evidences insufficient frankness of Ankara obligation to implement reforms to meet European Union standards. «We are not ideal, however if we look at what is done on our part, I consider we can call it a noiseless revolution. From time to time the prosecutor presents new materials, while the court turns these down. I am sure the court engaged in Orhan Pamuk’s case will pass a fair decree,» A. Gul said.
