The EU Council has approved Swedish diplomat Peter Semneby at the office of new EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus. Peter Semneby’s mandate will last until February 28, 2007 with possible extension. The mandate of the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus provides for helping Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia to implement reforms to ensure rule of law, democratization, human rights, poverty reduction. The EU Special Representative will also engage in conflict prevention and promoting their peaceful settlement, supporting economic, energy and transport cooperation between countries of the region, reported Mediamax.
