The UN Development Program intends to implement a project for social and economic development of Samtskhe-Javakhetia region of Georgia, which is populated mainly by Armenians. As reported by “Arminfo” agency referring to Georgian mass media, the program is planned to be implemented within 5 years. One of the main goals of the program is to reduce the ethnic tension in the region and to create conditions for a better integration of Samtskhe-Javakhetia with other regions of Georgia. The program provides for creation of mechanisms, which will promote business undertakings in the region, restoration of the available enterprises, as well as enlargement of the potential market of the region’s production. One of the directions of the program is the support of joint work of local self-government bodies and the central authorities. In the near future the UNDP will begin implementation of the preliminary stage of the project, which provides for opening a UNDP regional office and training specialists for implementing the program. The UNDP intends to allocate $254 thousand for the project initial stage.
