On the basis of the Azeri embassy in Moscow a national security ministry secret service network, which according to experts’ assessments numbers 5-7 persons with diplomatic passports, is launched. “Nezavisimaya Gazeta” reported it December 24. Operational measures are held by the Azeri national security ministry in Russia in several respects. According to the data of the newspaper competent sources, first of all it comes out in attempting to win over influential representatives of the Armenian diaspora in Moscow, as well as officers of the Armenian embassy. Within the recent few years, the article says, the Azeri counterspies have made over ten recruitment approaches to Armenian diplomats offering considerable financial resources in exchange for intelligence cooperation and handing out of secret information. Speaking of the work over Russian secret bearers, the newspaper writes, certain limitations are present due to possible political consequences in case of failure. The “enterprising people” among Russians, who would agree to cooperation voluntarily, are mainly staked upon. As the author notes, the Azeri special services are interested in getting information on military and engineering cooperation between Moscow and Yerevan, Russian military contingent in Georgia and Armenia, plans of operational use of the group of troops of the Russian armed forces in the region, the activities of the North Caucasian military district, Russian interests in privatizing objects of Armenian defense industry.
