In spite of protest expressed by a number of ecological and international organizations the Georgian government permitted the building of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline. As reported by “De Facto” agency, the permission is given under a number of compulsory conditions, and the failure to fulfill them automatically revokes the building permission. In particular, the oil pipeline is not expected to pass closer to ecological zones of Georgia, including the Borjomi gorge, where famous mineral springs are located. In Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze’s words, “an optimal solution” on the building of the Georgian segment of the pipeline is agreed upon resulting from the negotiations between the country government and the project investors. Commenting on the public concern about the ecological risks of the project, Shevardnadze assured that the investors had suggested ecological safety measures practically unexampled in international practice.
