ERDOGAN PREPARES CHANGES IN TURKISH CONSTITUTION

Leader of ruling Justice and Development party (AKP) of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who exercises influence within the power structures, stated that the government planned to make serious changes in the country constitution. These will in particular concern the paragraphs on political parties and the election system. As written by “Moskovskiye Novosti” newspaper, Erdogan pursues repeal of rigid control of the Turkish military over politics, which lets them keep in check Islamist organizations similar to AKP. The nearest outcome aimed at by Erdogan, who does not hold any state offices due to a judicial prohibition, is to introduce an amendment that will lift the ban for persons having served imprisonment to take official posts. Thus, his goal is to remove the last obstacle on the way to the prime ministerial office, which is held by his brother-in-arms Abdulla Gul for the time being. At the same time the newspaper finds it difficult to say how far the army will let Erdogan go.
