The majority of Armenian citizens residing in Russia still have old Soviet passports. As stated by Armenian ambassador to Russia Armen Smbatian, the Armenian embassy intends to create the institution of honorable consuls for solving the problem. In the ambassador’s words, the Soviet passports, which are considered invalid in Armenia, will be in force in Russia for another year and many our compatriots are not going to exchange them yet. “We do not wish to lose our citizens and should do everything to manage to substitute for their passports,” – he stated. The ambassador also reported that Armenian consulate would open in Rostov-on-Don Russian city in the near future. Let us note that some 600 thousand Armenians are citizens of Armenia out of the 2 million residing in Russia at present.
