IN RUSSIA ARMENIANS AND AZERIS EXCEED GERMANS IN NUMBER

At the time when Russia is withdrawing from the Caucasus, the Caucasus goes to Russia. “Nezavisimaya Gazeta” Moscow newspaper writes it on the basis of preliminary results of the population census held in Russia. In the words of Russian minister for affairs of nationalities Vladimir Zorin, “the power allocation” among nationalities in the country has changed noticeably. Germans have been left out of the ten biggest peoples of Russia. According to Zorin’s supposition, Azeris or Armenians will take their place. Chechens, which appeared to number far over one million, follow the Russians and Tatars in the list. Probably official numbers will not appear soon. But the general notion is already apparent to the President and the government. Moreover, Vladimir Zorin said that the state head had already commissioned him to start work on reconsideration of the conception of the Russian policy on nationalities.
