Turkey is not ready to join the European Union yet. Gunter Verkhojgen, responsible for EU expansion issues stated that in his interview with “Tagesspiegel” German newspaper. As “Arminfo” agency reports, at that Verkhojgen noted that the terms of Turkey’s joining the European Union made three years ago at the Helsinki summit did not change. In particular, to join the alliance, Turkey has to achieve European standards in both legal and democratic aspects. Verkhojgen stated that the EU leadership did make a definite decision on that issue. According to him, Denmark’s representative chairing in the EU has confirmed the decision of the European commission on that the final terms of Turkey’s joining the Union would not be specified until that state does not have political criteria of Europe. “The perspective of joining the European Union makes Turkey realize some reforms in the state”, Guntern Verkhojgen noted.
