ARMENIA NOT PLAN TO JOIN NATO

There is no item on joining the NATO on the agenda of foreign issues of Armenia. As Armenian defense ministry foreign relations department head major-general Mikael Melkonian has stated the official Yerevan’s position regarding that issue has been already heard for several times. At that the general noted that the cooperation with the NATO is the key component of the Armenian security based on the principle of complementarity and not contradictions. “We actively cooperate with the NATO within the framework of the Collective Security Pact and consider that cooperation complementary”, Mikael Melkonian noted. Regarding the possible joining of Georgia or Azerbaijan the NATO, the general noted, each state determines its political priorities itself. “I do not think that might become a serious problem for Armenia”, stated he, at that expressing perplexity regarding the possibility of prompt settlement of such issues. “Especially because many issues of cooperation may get completely different nature after the NATO summit in Prague”, the general noted.
