Armenian athletes win gold, silver, bronze at Gymnastics World Cup

Armenia's national gymnastics team brought home three medals from the Doha-hosted 9th Artistic Gymnastics World Cup.

Harutyun Merdinyan took the first spot in the men's pommel horse event, while Vahagn Davtyan and Artur Tovmasyan gained silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the still rings exercise.

World Cup winner Mardinyan, who will also participate in the Rio Olympics, said he is pleased with his performance.

“For this cup, I performed the same exercise program that I staged at the Glasgow-hosted World Gymnastics Championships in 2015, but did everything more accurately and earned higher scores,” the athlete said. “Ahead of the Olympic Games, such results are even more encouraging. In the near future, we’ll participate in the European Championships, where I’ll try to perform an exercise which I am going to present during the Olympics too.”

Davtyan said, in turn, that both he and Tovmasyan were very close to winning the Cup. “The rivalry between Artur and me benefits both of us. “

Tovmasyan said he was satisfied with the outcome too. “We have exceeded all our expectations and those of the coaches. This is the most important part here.”
