Czech officials oppose President’s bid to recognize Genocide

Chairman of the Czech Chamber of Deputies Jan Hamacek rejected President Milos Zeman’s proposal of recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

Commenting on a possible parliamentary discussion on the issue, Hamacek tweeted that historians, and not politicians are in charge of discussing history.

The country’s foreign policy chief Lubomir Zaoralek expressed a similar view, RIA reports.

“The massacre of Armenians is a tragic event with horrible consequences. But we should let historians make assessments on the culprits of the tragedy,” the Foreign Minister said.

When in Yerevan on June 7-9, President Zeman said he will advocate for the Armenian Genocide recognition by the Czech Republic.
